Nationalists have fight with policemen in Kyiv, hold rally in Independence Square

Representatives of the nationalist organizations, which have held a rally in the downtown Kyiv, had a brawl with law enforcement officials.

An Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported that the marching nationalists began to douse tires they have brought with them in gasoline at the intersection of Park Alley and Hrushevskoho Street, where participants in the events on the Epiphany Day in 2014 had burned tires to prevent the passage of law enforcement officials. Nationalists intended to burn tires symbolically to commemorate the events which had happened in the Independence Square (Maidan) three years ago.

Police officials impeded their plans.

Nationalists, in response, dropped tires and began to throw stones, sticks and firecrackers at police while shouting: "Hanba!" [Shame]. Following a brief scuffle, the sides split to a certain distance.

Then participants in the action, representatives of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), the Right Sector and the White Hammer, returned from Hrushevsky Street to the Independence Square and held a rally there.

Nationalists sang the national anthem of Ukraine and a call to return to the Maidan was made after that.

At the moment, participants in the rally are making speeches criticizing the current government under the Independence Monument.

They also said that it is not the last rally of theirs and that "the fight continues."
