Ukraine should gradually become part of NATO's eastern flank
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin has called for intensification of efforts towards Ukraine's integration into NATO. Ukraine should move ahead towards gradually becoming part of NATO's eastern flank and should work towards having a general understanding and awareness of the situation, which includes intelligence exchange, planning, and joint exercises, Klimkin said at a news briefing following a NATO-Ukraine Commission meeting on Wednesday. The same should concern the Black Sea region, which has become one of the most dangerous ones because of "Russia's aggression," Klimkin said. Ukraine's interaction with NATO in a number of key areas, including the reform of the Ukrainian security and defense sector, is among the alliance's priorities, Klimkin said. Ukraine will remain among the alliance's fundamental priorities, he reiterated. Klimkin said the participants in the meeting had reaffirmed their support for reforms in Ukraine. The acknowledgement of the fact that Ukraine is simultaneously opposing "Russia's aggression" and carrying out fundamental reforms is very important, he said.
