Canada to provide $8.1 mln for Ukrainian police development

The Government of Canada will provide $8.1 million in financial assistance for the development of the National Police of Ukraine in 2017 through the international technical assistance project, which is currently being registered, the press service of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry reported.

"Some $6.6 million will be spent on training Ukrainian law enforcement officers by Canadian police instructors. Then $1.5 million will be spent on modern technical equipment for police units and departments. The assistance will be provided through the Canadian Commercial Corporation - an official agency of the government of Canada which is coordinated by Canada's International Trade Ministry," the Ukrainian Interior Ministry reported in a statement posted on its Facebook page on Wednesday morning.

According to the ministry's press service, this matter was discussed during a meeting of Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov with Canadian Minister of International Trade Chrystia Freeland, which took place during the official visit of the Ukrainian delegation to Canada.

The report does not specify the currency of the proposed aid: it is unclear whether they mean U.S. dollars or Canadian dollars.

Avakov reported earlier on Twitter the government of Canada will provide assistance to the Interior Ministry of Ukraine to the tune of СAD 8.5 million.
