Yanukovych insists that killings of Maidan activists be investigated together with killings of law enforcement officials

Ukraine's ex-president Viktor Yanukovych has asked the court to take into account U.S. experts' decisions on the events that occurred on the Maidan in 2013-2014 and investigate the killings of civilian participants in the events in central Kyiv together with the killings of law enforcement officials.

Yanukovych began his speech in court as a witness in the case involving former members of the special task unit Berkut via a televised linkup from Rostov-on-Don, Russia, on Monday, with free comments and the lawyers for the aggrieved party said they are concerned that the ex-president is using the time allocated to representatives of the aggrieved party, an Interfax correspondent has reported.

Specifically, Yanukovych asked the court to take into account the materials of the American study of the events that occurred on the Maidan. "The decisions made on the basis of this study state that ultra-right and oligarchic parties were involved in the killings of protesters and police on the Maidan on February 20, 2014," he said.

Serhiy Diachuk, the judge chairing the Sviatoshyn District Court, for his part, said the court will study these materials if they are filed with the case materials, but it is now more important for the court to receive information possessed by Yanukovych.

"If issues relating to the killings of protesters on the Maidan are considered, the killings of the law enforcement officials who were also killed in the course of the events should definitely be investigated, and therefore I would ask you to file my personal opinion with the case materials [...] It will considerably help the court determine the truth," Yanukovych said.
