Foreign policy advisors start practical work in Ukrainian Defense Ministry

A group of foreign policy advisors have begun their work in the Defense Ministry of Ukraine.

According to the Defense Ministry press service, Defense Minister of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak has held a working meeting with a group of foreign advisors of strategic level, during which the parties discussed the situation in eastern Ukraine and the further work of advisers in Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

"In particular, said strategic advisors from the U.S., Britain, Canada and the Republic of Lithuania have moved beyond the introductory stage to practical work," the report says.

According to the report, the Defense Ministry considers the evaluation and assistance in all areas of initiated reforms as "important." Advisory Group meetings with the heads of subcommittees of the Ukrainian Reforms Committee of the Defense Ministry of Ukraine will take place in the near future.

"Representatives of four different sovereign states have assured that they have a lot of ideas both on how to share experiences and development of bilateral relations. They also expressed their desire to join the practical stage of reforming the Ukrainian Defense Ministry," the report says.

As reported, in September, the Defense Ministry said that at its request the United Kingdom and the U.S. sent high-level advisers to assist in the reform of the defense ministry.

In particular, the U.S. adviser is a four-star Gen. John Abizaid. From 2003 to 2007 Gen. John Abizaid had been serving as commander of the U.S. Armed Forces Central Command.

The UK advisor is General Nick Parker, former commander of the Land Forces of the UK Armed forces.
