Kyiv's Appeals Court has left in force the decision of a lower court on the pretrial detention of former first deputy head of the State Tax Service, ex-chief of the tax police Andriy Holovach with bail set at UAH 200 million.

"Ruling on appeal of the decision of Kyiv's Holosiyivsky district court of October 5, 2016, the court has left the lower court's ruling unchanged. The appeal by lawyers of the defendant is denied," reads the ruling of Kyiv's Appeals Court on Thursday.

Head of Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) Yuriy Lutsenko on August 9 said Holovach was arrested by the military prosecutor's office jointly with the Ukraine's SBU Security Service during the course of investigating cases involving former President Viktor Yanukovych (2010 to 2014). Holovach was arrested the same day, bail was set at UAH 200 million and Holovach's residence was searched.

"Four more tax officials serving under former Minister of Tax and Revenue Oleksandr Klymenko were arrested," Lutsenko said then.

Prosecutors say the detained are suspected of delaying reimbursement of value-added-tax payments in amount of about UAH 3.170 billion to suspicious enterprises, "which were under control of the criminal group of Yanukovych, [former Prime Minister Mykola] Azarov and Klymenko."
