Israeli President Rivlin cuts short visit to Ukraine after Peres' death

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin has cut short his visit to Ukraine after the death of former Israeli President Shimon Peres, the Israeli presidential office said on Wednesday.

It said Rivlin would be returning early and would arrive in Israel during the day.

The office said Rivlin "expressed his deep sadness on the passing of Israel's former president and prime minister Shimon Peres."

Peres "never ceased to work for the sake of the Zionist movement, for the sake of the State of Israel, and the people of Israel," the Israeli president said.

The Israeli Embassy in Kyiv confirmed that Rivlin was returning to his home country due to the Peres death.

"We confirm that the visit of Israeli President Reuven [Rivlin] has been cut short today. He will arrive in Israel today," a representative of the Israeli Embassy to Ukraine told Interfax on Wednesday.

Peres, 93, died on September 28. The former Israeli president will be buried on September 30.
