Too late to impose martial law in Ukraine – Savchenko

Proposals to impose martial law in Ukraine have come too late, Ukrainian parliamentarian (Batkivschyna Party) Nadiia Savchenko said.

"It is too late to impose martial law now, this should have been done in 2014, in Crimea," she said on the Channel 5 television on Thursday.

She expressed her surprise at the fact that people only now started talking of a possible imposition of martial law. "Why now? For two years no martial law was introduced, there was simply the war, blood was shed. Why do we want to introduce martial law now? For what? For everything in the country to stop simultaneously? For no more political activity? For people not to be able to take to Maidan? For the press to stop working? Because martial law prohibits everything," Savchenko said.

On July 19, National Security and Defense Council Secretary (NSDC) Oleksandr Turchynov said the NSDC would consider imposing martial law if the situation in the country's east continues to aggravate.

That is a possibility due to "systemic suffocation" of the situation in eastern Ukraine, he said.
