Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti has discussed regional security issues with former presidents of Moldova and Ukraine.

The meeting, which took place on Tuesday at Timofti's initiative, was attended by former Moldovan presidents Mircea Snegur and Petru Lucinschi and former Ukrainian leaders Leonid Kravchuk and Viktor Yuschenko, the presidential press service told Interfax.

The meeting was held "in the context of new threats to national and regional security," it reported.

"The sides discussed the crisis in eastern Ukraine and the frozen Transdniestrian conflict, which have common elements in their manifestation. The former presidents of Ukraine spoke about problems and the price Ukraine was paying for freedom and the pro-Western choice. They said that continuation of the European course of Moldova and Ukraine was the only way to restore both states into the zone of stability and sustainable socioeconomic development," the report said.

"Trouble unites people. We should demonstrate solidarity and support each other in our bilateral projects at such moments. We have agreed with the former chiefs of state to find solutions, which would promote rapprochement between our countries and cooperation in the pursuit of the European course," the press service quoted Timofti's words.
