Belarus has become a regional security donor, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said, calling for preservation of peace in the country as well.

"The global community considers Belarus a donor of regional security," Lukashenko said at the fifth All-Belarusian People's Assembly in Minsk on Wednesday.

"Being situated in the center of Europe we cannot stay out of challenges and threats," he said.

In this regard he recalled that the country's policy of peace allowed Belarus to become the main venue of peace negotiations on Ukraine.

Moreover, Lukashenko noted that "through the example of our neighbors we become sure that the distance between peace and war may be a very short one." "Thus, addressing the security issues, I always say that one has to keep their powder dry," he said.

The main task is "to preserve peace in the country and to preserve the country itself," he said.

He said that tensions on the southern borders of Belarus compel the country's authorities to improve the border control system.

"We have taken measures to provide border security of our country over recent years. Moreover, the situation compels us to do that, in particular, the situation on the southern borders of our homeland and on the western as well," he said.

Lukashenko said that "a package of measures is being implemented to improve the state border control system."

"In the first place, new divisions have been set in the southern sector. The integrated border control system has been created, advanced units of weapons and equipment have been introduced," he said. "The system created is an effective shield in the way of terrorism, drug-trafficking and illegal migration," he said.
