EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee welcomes Geneva+ format involving EU

EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee has said appointment of high official of international importance who would enjoy a trust of all sides might speed up the process and re-integration of occupied territories.

This follows from a final report and recommendations on the outcomes of the committee's third sitting, which took place in Brussels on April 28, 2016.

The committee welcomed Ukraine's initiative to establish an international mechanism for holding talks over restoration of Ukrainian sovereignty in Crimea in the Geneva+ format, "which is to directly include the EU."

According to the document, the Parliamentary Association Committee again confirmed its resolute support of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders and "supports the condemnation of aggressive and Russia's policy of expansion, which resulted in the illegal annexation of Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol and occupation of the certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions - a violation of international law and international agreements", and "is determined achieve the peaceful re-integration of these territories, stressing the grave consequences of this conflict for the security of Europe in general."

The committee reiterates that "The violation of norms and principles of international law and international humanitarian law by the Russian Federation led the EU to impose restrictive measures" and insists that these measures remain in force until the Minsk Agreements are fully fulfilled and the territorial integrity of Ukraine is restored in within the framework of internationally recognized borders."

The committee also urged all EU political officials to refrain from participation in any initiatives undermining this policy.
