FSIN: Savchenko extradition to Ukraine may be considered by court if guarantees are provided that sentence will be executed

The Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) will provide to the court documents on the extradition to Ukraine of Ukrainian citizen Nadiya Savchenko, who was convicted in Russia, only if Kyiv provides guarantees that the sentence will be executed, the FSIN press bureau has reported.

"If the Ukrainian Justice Ministry provides guarantees that the Russian court's sentence handed out to the convict will be fully executed, the recommendation issued by the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia will be sent to a Russian court on the basis of Articles 396 and 469 of the Russian Code of Criminal Procedure for a decision to be made to extradite convict Nadiya Savchenko to Ukraine," the press bureau said in a report sent in response to an inquiry from Interfax on Wednesday.

The document states that the agency is now collecting necessary materials, which, among other things, envisage a statement by Savchenko saying she wishes to serve the rest of her term in the country of which she is a citizen.

"A request for extradition to serve her term in her home country and also the time frameworks for making such a request are the convict's personal decision," the press release says.

FSIN says the package of documents for Savchenko's extradition will be sent to the Justice Ministry in accordance with the established procedures for the extradition issue to be discussed with the relevant Ukrainian authority.

Lawyer Mark Feygin told Interfax on Friday that Savchenko and her defense lawyer had filled out the documents for extradition, including a biographical reference, the consent to serve her term in Ukraine, and some questionnaires.
