Chornobyl donor conference to take place in Kyiv on April 25-26

The international conference to collect funds and send them to the Nuclear Safety Account (NSA) for the completion of the project to build a spent nuclear fuel storage facility two at Chornobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) is to take place in Kyiv on April 25 and April 16, the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management has reported.

Ukraine and Japan will co-chair the assembly. More than 20 countries, including G7 states, the European Commission and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development(EBRD), are invited to participate in the event.

The agency said that a meeting of the joint Ukraine-EBRD committee related to the implementation of international assistance projects to prepare for decommissioning of Chornobyl NPP was held on March 11. The reorganization of the Shelter Facility into the NSA and Shelter Fund-financed environment-friendly system was also discussed.

"The sides pointed at substantial progress in the realization of the project, excellent cooperation at the Chornobyl NPP site. They emphasized that all obstacles are to be removed to maintain the pace of works and successfully finish the projects in 2016-2017," the agency said in a press release.

According to the EBRD, the Donor Assembly organized by the bank will be held on April 25 and April 26 in Kyiv.
