Kyiv reports shelling of Kiminternove by militants

Ukrainian presidential administration spokesman for the Anti-Terrorist Operation Oleksandr Motuzyianyk reported shelling the Ukrainian positions by militants in the Kominternove area.

"Late in the evening illegal armed units have opened fire by mortars and anti-aircraft launchers in the direction of Ukrainian positions near the Hnutove village [Iliichevskyi district of Mariupol]. The time of shelling was chosen not accidentally, as in the course of the day the OSCE mission had been staying in this district, inspecting the Kominternove village for the presence of heavy weaponry belonging to illegal armed units there. And after the international monitors have left the district, the militants have opened fire on Ukrainian positions," Motuzianyk said at a press briefing in Kyiv on Sunday.

The work by the OSCE SMM monitors in the Kominternove area has been complicated by the actions taken by militants, who allowed the monitors to enter "only a part of the village, where it was profitable for them," concealing the traces of military hardware, which had been deployed at the backyards.

In the meantime, the press service for the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said earlier on Sunday that an attempt made by militants to discredit the Ukrainian Armed Forces had been curbed in the Kominternove area.

The press service said the administration of the Donetsk office of the OSCE SMM had asked Ukrainian representatives of the JCCC to allow the mission's patrol to travel from Kominternove to Vodiane for inspection purposes.

However, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry press service said it has information that militants "tried to direct the OSCE SMM patrol into an ambush, where [militants] dressed in Ukrainian military uniform planned to open fire and kill representatives of the mission, accusing the Ukrainian military of breaching the Minsk agreements and saying Ukraine is incapable of providing proper conditions for the fulfillment by the OSCE SMM of its functions within its mandate."
