Poroshenko unhappy with course of investigation into crimes committed during Revolution of Dignity

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that he is not happy with the course of investigation into crimes committed during the Revolution of Dignity late 2013 and early 2014.

"During this week the Prosecutor General's Office, Security Service of Ukraine and Interior Ministry reported on the course of the investigation. Of course, I'm not happy with the pace [of the investigation] and I do not want to be a lawyer of investigators, but the investigation into over 2,000 crimes against participants of protest actions really require a lot of efforts and time," the president said in his address to Ukrainians on the occasion of Day of Dignity and Freedom on Saturday.

He said that a lot of evidences were destroyed before new power received control over law enforcement agencies, and many persons managed to cover tracks and hide in that mess.

"Nevertheless it is proved that Yanukovych personally ordered these atrocities. The executors were then top managers of the Interior Ministry, SBU and NSDC. We've been punished in a moral way: people cursed on them, and God has deprived them of native land. It does not matter how much they will hide in Russia, the crimes they committed do not have the period of limitation. The trial in absentia temporarily applied to them. They are to be put into jail, as well as all their hatchetmen," Poroshenko said.

He also said that there is some progress in the punishment process: a group of persons, including Berkut officers have been detained. A total of 119 cases have been handed to court. Even 26 sentences have been awarded, but only for minor executors. A total of 270 persons received suspicion notifications, among them are 44 officials, 125 policemen, 11 judges, 9 prosecutors and dozens of organizers of the so-called 'Titushky' (thugs). In addition, some judges who issued unlawful verdicts against Maidan participants were dismissed, the president said.
