Poroshenko says foreign observers report no administrative pressure in Ukraine's local elections

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko has said that, according to preliminary estimates by international observers from non-governmental organizations, no administrative pressure was exerted during the October 25 local elections in Ukraine.

"I am pleased to note that, according to preliminary estimates by international observers from non-governmental organizations, they noted the absence of administrative resources and administrative influence on the voters," the president said after a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker in Kyiv on Monday.

Poroshenko said he has suggested that the parliament makes changes to the legislation that allows the organization of local elections in places where they were not held on October 25.

"I think we should study the experience of these elections while submitting changes to the legislation on the organization of elections where they didn't take place, specifically, in Mariupol. There is a need to change the electoral legislation and change the law on elections to prevent these technical errors in general," the president said.

Poroshenko reiterated that it is important "for us to return Ukraine to the occupied part of Donbas and the only way we can do it is through democratic elections."

Pritzker, for her part, gave high marks to the October 25 voting in Ukraine, but said Washington is expecting the results of the official ballot count and the international observers' evaluation.
