UN ready to increase its presence in Donbas – Ukraine's Foreign Ministry

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon have discussed the possibility of creating new mechanisms to facilitate the United Nations' involvement in efforts to settle the situation in Donbas, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

"UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon assured [Ukraine] of his complete support of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and announced his readiness to enhance the organization's presence with the aim of de-escalating and stabilizing the situation in the east of Ukraine," the ministry said.

At their meeting, Klimkin informed the UN secretary general about the course of negotiations under way within the 'Normandy format' and the trilateral Contact Group for Ukraine, as well as the progress already made in implementing the Minsk peace agreements for Ukraine and preparations to hold the local elections in line with international standards.

"[The parties] covered inadmissibility of Russia-backed militants' hampering of the work of United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on the territory of certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which for the last months made it impossible to bring humanitarian cargos of UN and other international organizations to the civil society," the ministry's press service said.
