Without elections in Donbas, political settlement of crisis will reach deadlock – Poroshenko

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has said that a political settlement of the situation in Donbas is only possible if elections are held there.

"I, as president, need the understanding and support of the parliament. There will be no elections without the Verkhovna Rada. Without elections in the occupied territories, the political settlement will reach a deadlock," he said in a public address on Sunday.

Poroshenko said that "some Ukrainian politicians do not conceal that it is a scenario they want, that's why they offer to "surrender, block and isolate".

"But it is very simple decision, which doesn't require intellect, political will, or diplomatic skill. That's why it is not my scenario. And it is not a scenario the majority of Ukrainians [want], who want peace and the reunification of the country," he said.

Poroshenko said that it appears that some national politicians don't understand that the situation in the country cannot return to as it was before March 1, 2014.

"Thus, extraordinary wisdom and farsightedness are required for the reintegration of territories. And it is even harder to return human hearts and souls," he said.
