Rescheduling of DPR and LPR elections gives new hope of resolving conflict in Ukraine - EU

The European Union has welcomed the announcement by the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR, respectively) of their decision to postpone local elections until next year.

"Together with the recently reached agreement on the withdrawal of smaller weapons this announcement offers renewed hope for a sustainable political settlement of the conflict, based on full respect of international law and Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity," the EU said in a statement.

The decision will "allow to prepare proper conditions for holding local elections," the authors said. Furthermore, "due implementation will represent a fundamental step towards full implementation of the Minsk agreements," the statement reads.

The DPR and LPR authorities announced the decision to delay the local elections, having demanded that Kyiv implement the entire Package of Measures of the February 12 Minsk agreements.
