Kyiv views activities of Russian special forces in Ukraine as military threat – military doctrine

Ukraine has identified as military threats Russia's military build-up near the Ukrainian border and the surge in intelligence gathering and subversive activities of the Russian special forces in Ukraine, according to the new military doctrine of the country which was published on the official website of the president of Ukraine on Thursday.

According to the doctrine, the current military threats to Ukraine include armed aggression and the violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, Russia's military buildup in close proximity to the state border of Ukraine, including the possibility of deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea; as well as the militarization of temporarily occupied territory by Russia.

Other threats include "the presence of the Russian military contingent in the Transdniestrian region of Moldova, which could be used to destabilize the situation in southern regions of Ukraine."

Another threat for Ukraine is the intensification of the intelligence and subversive activities in Ukraine by Russian special forces which are aimed at destabilizing the internal social and political situation in Ukraine, as well as at supporting the unlawful armed groups in the eastern regions of Ukraine."

The doctrine also focuses on Russia's territorial claims to Ukraine and encroachment on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
