Normandy format meeting at ministerial level can be conducted before end of this week – Klimkin

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said the ministerial meeting in the 'Normandy format' can be conducted before the end of this week.

"We have discussed the possibility of conducting a meeting at the ministerial level in the 'Normandy format' with my partners from Germany, France and the Russian Federation. One of the options is to hold this meeting before the end of this week. Of course, we should see what the results of today's meeting in Minsk will be because the Trilateral Contact Group and all four working groups are meeting there," Klimkin told reporters in Brussels on Monday.

He emphasized the need for a practical outcome of the ministerial meeting.

Klimkin also said it is important that Russia should be ready to discuss the issue of Ukrainians Nadia Savchenko, Oleh Sentsov, Oleksandr Kolchenko and others, who were arrested in Russia.

"And of course, Russia needs to be ready for the process of real preparations for free and fair elections in Donbas," the Ukrainian minister said.

Klimkin said participation by the OSCE in the preparations for and the organization of the elections is compulsory, or the elections will not be recognized by anyone.

"Russia's readiness not to extend with the others the fake October 18 and November 1 elections is an important issue because it will lead to a very difficult situation in the Minsk process and we need international pressure on the Russian side here, so that everything is fulfilled," Klimkin said.
