SBU liquidates terrorist group planning to blow up house in Kyiv's Obolonsky district

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has liquidated a terrorist group in Kyiv which planned to commit a terrorist attack.

"Four members of the terror group were detained. They planned to blow up an apartment block in Obolonsky district," the SBU press center told Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

During the arrests, one of the detained resisted and used a grenade, however according to preliminary reports there were no injuries.

Subsequently, a reported appeared on the SBU website which stated that the four arrested persons are members of a pro-Russian NGO, and that a native of Russia's Sakhalin region organized the terrorist group to "commit a terrorist attack in Kyiv together with accomplices – citizens of Kyiv and [of the wider] region."

The target was a multi-storey apartment block on Mayorova Street in the Obolonsky district of Kyiv, where an Anti-Terrorist Operation volunteer center is located.

"The offenders actively resisted using arms and managed to blow up a RGD-5 grenade outside the reception. As a response, security officers used service guns and one of the terrorists in the leg. The devices which might have been used for committing terrorist attacks were seized. Thus, a real menace to lives and health of Kyivans was prevented," said the report.

According to the press service, if the attack took place as planned, the organizer of the terrorist group would have fled for the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea.

The SBU has opened a criminal case under Article 258, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act).
