OSCE does not regard ceasefire in Donbas as of Sept 1 complete – Hug

The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) did not confirm the attainment of a full ceasefire in the military operation zone in Donbas.

The relative silence after last week's meeting of the Trilateral Contact Group in Minsk demonstrated the ability of the negotiating parties to observe an agreement on ceasefire before the start of the new academic year. However, the OSCE SMM cannot confirm the complete ceasefire as of September 1, OSCE SMM Deputy Chief Monitor Alexander Hug told a press briefing in Kyiv on Wednesday.

He said that he was told that, in particular, the mission monitors had reported over 30 shellings and blasts in the area of Donetsk airport. Hug also said that 406 explosions and shellings had been reported in this area over the past week.

The monitors are witnessing the use of weapons in many places, their use is concentrated in the area of Starohnativka controlled by Kyiv and to the north of Mariupol in Telmanove controlled by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), he said.

Meanwhile, Hug said that there were no truce violations in the Luhansk region on August 29 and 31. However, after this, truce violations took place in the area of Stanytsia Luhanska and the town of Schastia, and the use of weapons resumed in the area of Staryi Aidar, Popasne and Zolote.

Hug said that the monitors have examined the holes from blasts in the settlements of Sopyne, Lebedynske, Kominternove, Telmanove and Sakhanka.
