Ukrainian prosecutor general believes criminal organization stands behind Aug 31 events near Rada building

Certain information obtained by Ukrainian investigators indicates that a criminal organization might have been set up to provoke the events that occurred during a rally near the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada building on August 31, Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin says.

"I also believe there are signs of a crime covered by Ukrainian Criminal Code Article 255, that is, the establishment of a criminal organization," Shokin said.

The Prosecutor General's Office press service had earlier quoted Shokin as saying that a criminal investigation on terrorism charges had been opened into the August 31 events near the Rada building.

In Shokin's view, an act of terrorism was committed during the said events, taking into consideration information obtained by the investigative team.

Therefore, information regarding the August 31 events has been filed with the Unified Register of Pretrial Investigations as that qualified under Ukrainian Criminal Code Article 348 (attempt on the life of a law enforcement official, a member of a social group for protecting public order or the state border, or a military serviceperson), Article 345 Part 3 (a threat or violence against a law enforcement official), Article 293 (violation of public order by a group), Article 294 Part 2 (mass unrest), and Article 258 Part 3 (act of terrorism), the Prosecutor General's Office said.
