Rada to approve several laws before new edition of Constitution takes effect – speaker

The Verkhovna Rada should pass several laws within two years before the new edition of the Ukrainian Constitution takes effect, Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Groysman said.

While commenting on his words regarding the "months of debate" on constitutional changes at Interfax's request, the speaker said: "We are not talking about amendments. We are talking about the laws that we need to adopt."

Groysman said that there is a need to pass a law on prefects which governs the frameworks of the work of prefects.

The speaker also said a new law on local self-governance needs to be adopted. "And many other laws associated with the implementation of changes to the Constitution. These are months of hard work. You know that the transition provisions of the Constitution state that it takes effect in two years," Groysman said.

The speaker said that the parliament should prepare the relevant legislation within these two years.
