EU to send their representatives to monitor trials of Savchenko and Sentsov in Russia

European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini informed Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin about sending EU representatives to monitor the trials of Ukrainian pilot Nadia Savchenko and film director Oleh Sentsov, who are illegally held in custody in Russia.

Mogherini sent a corresponding letter to Klimkin on Tuesday in response to his appeal dated July 16 to the foreign ministers of the EU countries, the Group of Seven and the leadership of international organizations to send their representatives to the trials of Savchenko, Sentsov and Oleksandr Kolchenko, the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported.

"The EU High Representative noted that the presence of representatives of the international community at the said trials will guarantee their transparency and serve as a reminder that the EU expects Russia to confirm its obligations to observe international law," a commentary from Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mariana Betsa said.

"Mogherini also noted that the release of Savchenko and other Ukrainian citizens illegally held in custody in Russia complies with the Package of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk Agreements," Betsa said.
