Poroshenko: Ukraine is sovereign state, neither East nor West can make Constitution demands

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that any attempts to pressure Ukraine over its political structure and amendments to its Constitution on decentralization and the status of certain areas in Donetsk and Luhansk regions will be fruitless.

"Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state, and neither Ukraine, nor I as its President will allow [terms to be] dictated [to us] by the East or West," he said in an interview with 1+1 TV channel on Sunday.

Poroshenko said that including the provision on the special order of self-administration in certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the Constitution was supported by the Constitutional Commission, the most authoritative Constitution experts, members of the Venice Commission, as well as Ukraine' s European and American partners.

"Who's against? Russia. Why? Because they wanted to make Ukraine a state of bondage via amendments to the Constitution and impose the federation structure, they wanted to have influence on all foreign and home policies of Ukraine via certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Ukraine won't allow that. If needed I will bring this question to a referendum, if needed I will gain support of the people, and the people today is ready to take decisive steps so that Ukraine had peace," Poroshenko said.
