Poroshenko introduces new Security Service chief to its staff

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has introduced new Security Service (SBU) chief Vasyl Hrytsak to the service's top brass on Friday, the SBU said on Twitter.

The presidential press service reported later that, in introducing Hrytsak to the chiefs of the SBU directorates, departments and divisions, Poroshenko noted that the service had undergone significant reform over the past year.

"In fact, we had to create the service from scratch," he said.

The president outlined the primary objectives facing the SBU.

In particular, the SBU's primary tasks include preventing the destabilization of the situation in the country.

"You see how both external and internal enemies of Ukraine are acting," he said.

Poroshenko pointed to the importance of the SBU's more active work to efficiently oppose crimes against the state and terrorist threats and emphasized particular significance of maintaining order on the contact line in Donbas.

The president also pointed to the need to oppose separatism and cited examples of the SBU's successful work toward this.

He mentioned measures against corruption and smuggling among the SBU's priorities.

Poroshenko called for stepping up the counterintelligence work, including in the military area, in close interaction with Ukraine's partners.

He also mentioned the need for providing the proper legislative, organizational, informational, and administrative support for intelligence and counterintelligence activities among the important areas of the SBU's reform.

The Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada supported Hrytsak's candidacy for Security Service chief nominated by Poroshenko on July 2.
