EP president promises to do his best to speed up establishment of visa-free regime for Ukraine

European Parliament (EP) President Martin Schulz has said that some problems exist in the process of granting Ukraine a visa-free regime with the EU, but has promised to do his best to speed up this process.

"I will do everything possible to speed up the negotiation process. There are still some problematic issues to solve, but I have a feeling that the Commission's report will be submitted in September and I am optimistic about the future and I think that on its basis we will be able to find a solution to overcome the remaining obstacles," Schulz said before negotiations with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Kyiv on Friday.

He said that the visa-free regime for Ukrainian citizens and free access to the European market is very important for both sides and will contribute to the development of the Ukrainian and European economies.

In turn, Poroshenko noted the importance of the European Parliament's role in achieving a visa-free regime for Ukraine.

"I think that the role of the EP is extremely important in securing a visa-free regime for Ukraine already in 2016. And I hope that the MEPs, most of whom are true friends of Ukraine, will take every effort, together with the Ukrainian authorities ,so that Ukrainians should be granted the right of visa-free travel to the EU in 2016," Poroshenko said.
