Ukraine expects to cancel short-term visas to EU in 2016 – Deputy Foreign Minister

Ukraine is going to ensure that visas for Ukrainian citizens to make short-term visits to the EU will be scrapped in 2016, Ukrainian First Deputy Foreign Minister Natalia Halibarenko said at a press conference in Minsk on Tuesday.

According to her, by September 2015, Ukraine is going to finish the technical part of the Action plan on liberalization of the visa regime between Ukraine and the EU. This will allow further work on the simplification of the visa regime to be carried out.

"If we manage on time, it will allow [us] to make a corresponding, hopefully positive, decision on the cancellation of visa-free regime for Ukrainians' short-term trips already in 2016," Halibarenko said during informal ministerial dialogue of the EU Eastern Partnership Initiative in Minsk.

In addition, the press service of Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported that Halibarenko noted the necessity to focus joint efforts on four priority directions defined in the final declaration of Riga "Eastern Partnership" Summit. In particular, these include boosting the institutes of state governance, mobility, extension of economic possibilities, transport and energy.

"The topics of the discussion also included the international agenda, particularly the escalation of the situation in eastern Ukraine and adhering to the Minsk accords," she added.
