Ukrainian presidential administration spokesman: there is fighting going on near Donetsk

Militants are trying to break through in Donetsk area on Wednesday, Andriy Lysenko, spokesman for the Ukrainian presidential administration for the anti-terrorist operation in Donbas, said.

"The enemy began massive attacks on our positions in the Maryinka and Krasnohorivka area, including using heavy weapons, at 03:00 they used tanks, mortars and artillery. The enemy is trying to advance," the spokesman said.

Lysenko said "the Ukrainian military are repelling all attacks and are successfully holding their positions."

"The situation is under control," Lysenko said.

Lysenko said there is every reason to call these actions militants attempts to advance," but this attack is taking place on a narrow part of the front and therefore we currently cannot speak about a massive offensive by the enemy."

"It's not a regular situation because there are explosions, shooting and some people have been wounded. None of our guys were killed in the past 24 hours - it's a miracle," he said.

"We don't know the militants' plans. But we understand that this intensification only began after a signal from Moscow […] If the pressure increases, reserves will be brought up, there will be an appropriate response - support to hold our positions," Lysenko said.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said earlier on Wednesday Russia had ordered militants to "begin a military operation" in the eastern part of the country.
