Ukrainian government liquidates public morality watchdog

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has liquidated the National Expert Commission of Ukraine on Protecting Public Morality.

This is stipulated in cabinet resolution No. 333 of May 27.

As reported, in early April Vasyl Kostytsky resigned as head of the commission.

The state-funded commission was formed in 2004. It consisted of 39 members until they all tendered their resignations to the cabinet on February 19, 2015.

On February 10, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine moved to disband the commission by adopting a law removing clauses which defined the status, rights and liabilities of the commission from the law on protecting public morals. Clauses on the licensing of films, audio and video products which received restricted audience certifications and the licensing of pornography were also revoked.
