Kyiv provides enough reasons for EC to extend sanctions against ex-Ukrainian officials - Klimkin

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin has said he believes Ukraine has provided enough evidence to the European Commission (EC) for it to prolong sanctions imposed on individuals close to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

"Yesterday's decision of the European Commission is well-known for all – these are sanctions, which are based on clear arguments of the legal character. The Prosecutor General's Office granted such facts towards many individuals, which are mentioned in these lists. Moreover, the EC under clear reasons excluded Yanukovych Jr. [the deceased son of Viktor Yanukovych, Viktor] off these lists. The work continues over other persons," Klimkin told journalists in Kyiv on Tuesday.

On June 1, the European Union removed the deceased younger son of Yanukovych from the list. However, former education minister Dmytro Tabachnyk, former justice minister Olena Lukash, and MP Serhiy Kliuyev remain on the list. Tabachnyk and Lukash will continue to be subject to sanctions for half a year, and Kliuyev – for another four months.

The EU is expected to announce the respective decision on June 6.
