Donbas sees daily truce breaches, sides should honor Minsk accords - Steinmeier

The area of the Ukrainian army's operation in eastern Ukraine sees daily ceasefire breaches, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has said, calling on the sides in the Donbas conflict to abide by the Minsk agreements.

"Although the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) is trying today to calm down the situation around Shyrokyne and the Donetsk airport, we see violations of the ceasefire every day," he told a security forum in Kyiv on Friday.

The implementation of the peace accords for Ukraine, reached at talks in the Belarusian capital Minsk in February, is the only way to settle the Donbas conflict, the German minister said.

Sub-groups within the trilateral Contact Group for Ukraine will meet on June 2 to discuss security issues, humanitarian aid, the economic restoration of the region and political reforms, Steinmeier said.

"The number of challenges in all these four areas is impressive and requires rapid progress," he said.

The German minister also reiterated the importance of fully observing the ceasefire, withdrawing all heavy weapons from the line of contact and restoring full control over the Ukrainian border.

"The Minsk agreements are a political path, a path of avoiding further escalation of the situation, and a path that requires all sides in the conflict to sit down at the negotiating table," he said.
