Ukraine has every right to appeal for UN peacekeeping mission - Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko believes that Kyiv has every right to appeal to the international community for a peacekeeping mission to be dispatched to his country.

"For over 20 years Ukraine has been helping in ensuring peace and stability worldwide. The time has come when Ukraine has the right to appeal to the UN Security Council for the UN peacekeeping troops to help us establish peace," Poroshenko said at an award ceremony Ukrainian peacekeepers on the eve of the International Day of Peacekeepers, which is celebrated on May 29.

Poroshenko believes that a peacekeeping mission would ensure control over the Ukrainian-Russian border and prevent the inflow of new arms and military equipment.

"We must do everything to liberate our land, rebuff the invaders, aggressors, terrorists, torturers of civilians, those who paralyze the economy in the hostilities zone, those who deprive people of a normal life," the president's press service quoted Poroshenko as saying.

Poroshenko said the performance of Ukrainian peacekeepers has always been praised by UN officials and those they defended.

"Fifteen months ago nobody could imagine that the tasks Ukraine was fulfilling in conflict areas would become increasingly topical for our country as well. Your experience, skills and morale are essential for Ukraine," he said.
