A criminal inquiry has been opened into a gunfire attack on a motor vehicle of the Joint Control and Coordination Center in the anti-terrorist operation zone in Donbas. The motor vehicle was carrying a Ukrainian serviceman and chief of the Russian mission in the Center, Col. Gen. Alexander Lentsov. No one was hurt.

"The incident is being investigated on terrorism charges," Ukrainian spokesman Ruslan Semenyuk told Interfax.

"The Ukrainian motor vehicle was carrying a Ukrainian driver - a Ukrainian serviceman, and members of the Russian mission in the Center, led by Lentsov. As it was traveling from the checkpoint in Horlivka to the checkpoint in Mayorsk, the vehicle came under automatic rifle fire. Importantly, it was attacked in the territory not controlled either by Ukraine, or the militia," Semeniuk said on Sunday.

"Thanks to the Ukrainian driver's skills, the damaged motor vehicle reached the Ukrainian checkpoint in Mayorsk after covering two kilometers. The members of the group switched to another motor vehicle and continued their journey," he said.

"The Russian side has not filed complaints with Ukraine," he added.

But he said, citing a report on the characteristics of the bullet holes in the motor vehicle that, "the bursts were delivered on the back of the car from the side opposite the Ukrainian checkpoint."

The Joint Control and Coordination Center's Russian spokesman told Interfax on Saturday evening that a motor vehicle carrying a Russian general and officers attached to the Joint Control and Coordination Center came under fire as it was crossing the frontline in southeastern Ukraine.

"Happily, neither the Russian officers, nor the Ukrainian driver were hurt," the spokesman said.

The incident occurred at about 5:40 p.m. when the motor vehicle was crossing the frontline between the Horlivka checkpoint, controlled by the militia of the self-declared Donetsk people's republic, and the checkpoint Mayorsk, controlled by Ukrainian forces, he said.

The motor vehicle was carrying Russian general Alexander Lentsov, and two Russian officers under his command, the Joint Control and Coordination Center said.

Col. Gen. Lentsov and the officers attached to the Center are now in Shyrokyne in Novoazovsk district of Donetsk region, where they are exercising control over the observance of ceasefire in one of the most troubled stretches of the contact line, the Center said.
