One killed, two wounded in shelling of Avdiyivka - Ukrainian police official

One man was killed and two women gravely wounded as a results of two days of shelling of Avdiyivka in Donetsk region, chief of the Interior Ministry department in Donetsk region Viacheslav Abroskin has announced.

"There are no steady communications with the town. The town remains without electricity or water supplies. One young man was killed and two women severely wounded," he wrote on Facebook on Sunday.

He noted that the operation of the local coke factory was suspended as a result of the shelling.

"In two days over 70 shells hit the territory of the plant. There are no army units near the plant. If there had been any, one could understand the massive shelling of this particular territory," the police official added.

Representatives of Metinvest Group which the Avdiyivka coke factory is integrated with, said earlier that the factory was shelled on Saturday and that production has been suspended.

The company said that more than 40 shells hit the factory premises. No casualties occurred.

It also said that it was a second massive shelling attack on the factory over the past few days. The attack delivered on May 21 left one employee killed and two others wounded, the company said. The railway and repair departments were damaged the worst.

The Avdiyivka Coke-Chemical Plant is one of Europe's largest plants of its kind. Metinvest's main shareholders are System Capital Management (Donetsk) with a 71.24% stake and Smart Holding Group (23.76%).

LLC Metinvest Holding is Metinvest Group's management company.
