Political processes in Donbas should start after firing stopped, weapons withdrawn, POWs freed – Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko supports the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) position that political and economic processes in Donbas should start after the situation there stabilizes.

"I want to support the OSCE statement that deputy chief monitor Alexander Hug made today by stressing clearly that all political and economic processes and also those requiring humanitarian solutions should be started only after securing a full-scale ceasefire, guaranteed withdrawal of heavy hardware and artillery, the release of prisoners of war, and the OSCE mission should have the opportunity to inspect all storage sites for the withdrawn hardware and artillery," Poroshenko told journalists in Berlin during his visit to Germany on Wednesday.

He also mentioned the importance of providing monitors with access to sections of the Ukrainian-Russian border not controlled by Kyiv and ending supplies of Russian weapons to the militants.

Over 400 prisoners of war are held by the militants, and more than 30 are held in Russia, Poroshenko said.

"We insist that the Minsk agreements must be implemented unconditionally, and our citizens must be freed in the near future, including the release of Nadia Savchenko, a Hero of Ukraine, a Ukrainian parliamentary deputy and a PACE member," he said.
