Ukrainians' opinion of NATO getting better – poll

The public opinion of Ukrainian towards joining NATO is slowly getting more positive, and the number of supporters of joining NATO has already got more than the number of those opposing the idea, according to the results of the poll conducted by the Razumkov Center.

"If in August 2011, 17.9% were going to vote for joining NATO and 59.6% – against it, if such a referendum were to take place, in April 2014 [the results] were 36.7% and 41.6% correspondingly. In March 2015 – 43.4% and 31.6% correspondingly," reads the press release on the results of the poll posted on Thursday.

A total of 73.4% would vote for joining NATO in the west, and only 8.3%of the respondents would vote against it in that region. In central regions the results are as follows: 48.8% and 28.2% correspondingly, in the south – 22.8% and 33%, in the east – 29% and 53.5%, in Donbas [not taking into account the occupied territories] – 21.5% and 42.9%.

In addition, positive attitude towards NATO is expressed more often then the negative one (correspondingly 44.7% and 39.2%). The same is the case with the IMF (correspondingly 44.8% and 34.9%).

"The majority of respondents showed negative attitude toward Russia (67.3%) and Customs Union (60.8%)," read the poll results.

The survey was conducted by the sociological service of the Razumkov Center through March 6-12 , 2015. A total of 2,009 respondents over 18 years old from the whole Ukraine accept for temporarily occupied Crimea and parts of Donbas were surveyed. The poll's margin of error doesn't exceed 2.3%. The survey was conducted wit the support of Sweden government.
