Heavy, relentless shelling by pro-Russian troops evidence of heavy weapons on frontline – BBC

BBC correspondents have witnessed Ukrainian military positions being shelled with heavy artillery by militants in Shyrokyne, near Mariupol, the online edition of Novyny Donbasu (Donbas News) has reported, citing BBC correspondent Tom Burridge.

The BBC team witnessed heavy and persistent shelling by pro-Russian forces on Ukrainian army positions, which completely undermines the peace agreement signed more than two months ago, the edition said.

"We felt heavy, relentless shelling by pro-Russian troops and evidence of heavy weapons on the frontline, east of Mariupol," Burridge wrote on his Twitter page.

He said the missiles fell so often that it was even difficult to count them.

"Roughly an hour of heavy shelling by pro-Russian forces in Shyrokyne, east of Mariupol yesterday evening, just after OSCE team left Ukraine," Burridge tweeted.

He said that Ukrainian military had shown the journalists one missile which was fired by the militants, and hit a house. However, the missile did not explode, meaning that it was launched by heavy artillery, which was supposed to have been withdrawn from Shyrokyne under the Minsk agreements.
