I won't allow people carrying illegal weapons to walk around free – Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that illegal armed formations must be disarmed and that carrying unlicensed weapons cannot be allowed.

"There's no way the state, the authorities and I as a President, will allow Ukrainian cities, Ukrainian roads and even the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) zone to have illegal armed formations or persons with unlicensed arms [present]," Poroshenko said in an interview on Channel 5 TV on Saturday.

He said that after he ordered the disarming of people operating under the guise of security firms, 40 people in the regions near the ATO zone and in the ATO zone itself had been detained.

"We can say that the number of weapons that went missing for some reason after the task to take stock of all the weapons used by all detachments amounted to 2,000. Today we can say that over 1,000 [weapons] have been already returned as the result of the operation," Poroshenko said.

He also said that people have the right to demand that the state ensures their security.

"We'll do our best to make armed assaults on people are impossible. Militants, sabotage and intelligence groups, which are also being sent from abroad or have undergone training abroad, must be disarmed well before reaching towns," Poroshenko said.

He said the Security Service of Ukraine detains up to ten sabotage groups every week, which proves the efficiency of their work.

"Free circulation of arms leads to chaos. The state's efficient actions lead to order and order is what people want to see today," Poroshenko added.
