Ukraine's foreign ministry confirms four Ukrainians part of crew of Russian trawler sunk in Sea of Okhotsk

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Yevhen Perebyinis has confirmed that the crew of Russia's trawler Dalny Vostok, which sank off the Kamchatka peninsula early on April 2, included four Ukrainian citizens, of whom three also have Russian passports.

"The emergencies ministry for the Sakhalin region has informed us that three of these four identified crew members have passports of the Russian Federation because they are Crimean residents. Information about the fourth person is being verified," Perebyinis told Interfax–Ukraine on Thursday morning.

However, it is yet unknown whether the Ukrainians are alive or dead, he said.

"Our consulate in Vladivostok is monitoring the situation," he added.

The Dalny Vostok freezer trawler sank within 15 minutes in the Sea of Okhotsk, 300 kilometers south of Sakhalin, early on April 2. Fifty-four sailors have so far been confirmed dead and another 15 remain unaccounted for. Sixty-three people were rescued alive. Of them, ten are in serious condition.

The vessel had some 132 people on board when in sank. They include 78 Russian citizens, 42 citizens of Myanmar, five citizens of Vanuatu, three Latvians, and four Ukrainians.
