PGO refuses to extradite Saakashvili to Georgia

The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine (PGO) has rejected the request made by the Georgian Prosecutor General's Office on the extradition of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to Georgia.

"Based on the results of a check, the PGO concluded that there was a risk that the request to extradite Saakashvili was made by the relevant Georgian agencies with the purpose of persecuting him for political reasons. In addition, his extradition would contradict the requirements of the European Convention on Human Rights 1950," reads the statement released by the PGO press service on Wednesday.

According to the PGO, the Georgian prosecutors have been informed of the decision.

As reported, the Georgian Prosecutor General's Office had called on the Ukrainian authorities to extradited wanted individuals, including Mikheil Saakashvili.
