Belarus leader urges U.S. to join in efforts to settle Ukraine conflict

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has argued that it is essential that the United States should get involved in efforts to settle the conflict in Ukraine.

"It is especially alarming that the United States of America hasn't openly got involved in this process. I don't think that any stability is possible in Ukraine without the Americans. During my recent meetings with officials from the United States of America, officials who have been here, I persistently tried to bring this point of view to their attention, saying that I didn't know what the Americans wanted here in Eastern Europe, in Ukraine in particular, but if the Americans wanted peace and stability here, they should immediately get involved in that process," Lukashenko told Bloomberg.

The quotes were made available to Interfax by the Belarusian president's office.

In his detailed interview, Lukashenko "dwelled on the role of leading global players in trying to settle the Ukrainian situation and maintain military and political stability worldwide," the president's office said.

"Development prospects of the Eurasian Economic Union and the mutual currency integration of its members were also touched upon," it said.
