Poroshenko against granting bail in major corruption cases

1 min read

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said he is against granting bail to those accused of a large-scale corruption, especially under war conditions.

"Unfortunately, the current laws foresee bail, for now. Under the conditions of extortion, large-scale corruption, we must remove the possibility of releasing corrupt officials, criminals that are stealing from the country for bail," Poroshenko said in an interview on ICTV channel on Saturday.

According to him, the battle against corruption is crucial for Ukraine's survival as a state.

"When we still have corruption, the country can't be saved – investments won't come to us, local businesses won't raise their head, people will be depressed," Poroshenko said.

At the same time, he said that "every official must feel that bribery won't be left unpunished."
