Poroshenko enacts NSDC appeal on deploying peacekeepers in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has enacted an appeal made by the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) dated February 18 to the United Nations and the European Union, on deploying a peacekeeping mission in eastern Ukraine.

Poroshenko signed corresponding decree No. 116/2015 on Monday, March 2, the president's press service reported. The decree came into force on the date of its publication.

The National Security and Defense Council decided that Ukraine's national security, the urgent resolution of the crisis in certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and the effective implementation of the Minsk agreements necessitated a request to the UN Security Council and the Council of the European Union for deploying an international peacekeeping and security mission in Ukraine.

Hence, the NSDC suggested that the president appeal to the international organizations on behalf of Ukraine for the deployment of peacekeepers as well as that he address the Verkhovna Rada regarding this request. "The government was ordered to make urgent proposals about the legislative support to the international peacekeeping and security operation on the Ukrainian territory," the report said.
