Ex-MP Chechetov commits suicide – police

Mykhailo Chechetov, former deputy head of the Party of Regions parliamentary faction in the time of the president Viktor Yanukovych, killed himself jumping out of the window of his apartment at Mishuhy Street r in Kyiv on the night of February 27.

"At 02:00 [Chechetov's] wife revealed a light in the office room and found a note on the table. He jumped out the window of the seventeenth floor of his apartment," the spokesman of the Main Investigative Department of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry told Interfax-Ukraine in Kyiv on Saturday.

The police said that Chechetov's wife found a suicide note with such a content: "No moral strength to live any longer. Please understand me. Please forgive me."

Despite the testimony of Chechetov's wife and a note proving the suicide, the police followed the regular procedure and still opened a criminal probe on preliminary murder to check all the possible versions of his death.

Chechetov was arrested on February 21. The ruling is in effect until April 14.

On February 20, the Public Prosecutor's Office said that Chechetov was informed that he is suspected of committing a crime while voting in parliament on January 16, 2014 for laws which restricted civil liberties.

The former MP is suspected of committing a crime under Articles 364 and 366 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (abuse of power and forgery in public office).

Later on, Chechetov has been released from custody after his bail at UAH 5 million was paid.

He was under home arrest and wore an electronic bracelet.
