Berkut policemen suspected of shooting at Maidan activists identified – PGO

Berkut riot policemen who were involved in shooting at peaceful protestors during the Revolution of Dignity have been identified, the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine (PGO) press service reported on Monday.

"As a result of the investigation conducted in cooperation with the Interior Ministry of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine, the Directorate of Special Investigation of the Main Investigative Department of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine identified all the servicemen of the Berkut special police unit affiliated to the Main Directorate of Ukraine's Interior Ministry, who were involved in shooting at protesters on Instytutska Street in Kyiv on February 20, 2014, " the press service reported, adding that 39 peaceful protestors had died from bullet wounds and at least 8 people had been injured.

According to the press service, on February 23, 2015, in addition to a previously apprehended Berkut commander and two Berkut servicemen, the investigators said they suspected another 20 Berkut members of abuse of power which led to grave consequences, premeditated murder and conspiring to commit the murder of several persons, loss of a service weapon, etc.

Two of the above-mentioned Berkut members were apprehended as the result of a joint operation by PGO, Interior Ministry and the Security Service of Ukraine. The others were put on the wanted list. They are to be brought to court which will make a decision on restrictive measures, the press service reported.

The investigators have acquired additional evidence incriminating the above-mentioned persons and the investigation is ongoing, reads the PGO statement.
