Debaltseve and Mariupol areas key target of militants' strikes – Ukrainian army

Militants' forces continued to shell the Ukrainian army's positions all through the night, but the intensity of such strikes declined somewhat, the press center of Kyiv's anti-terrorist operation said on its Facebook account on Thursday morning.

"The enemy shelled Debaltseve and nearby villages nine times using almost all kinds of weapons. The enemy also fired multiple-launch rocket systems against Vilkhove and Petrivka. Tanks and mortars were fired against Stanytsia Luhanska and Krymske," it said.

In the Donetsk region, the localities of Kurakhove and Novomykhailivka became the target of strikes involving multiple-launch rocket systems.

The Ukrainian military also noted that the "adversary" had stepped up its reconnaissance operations near the town of Mariupol.

"In this area, servicemen have registered three flights of drones over our positions," the press center said.

For his part, Luhansk region governor Hennadiy Moskal reported that militants stationed in the locality of Vesela Hora fired Grad multiple-launch rocket system against the town of Schastia. Some of the shells exploded on the premises of a local thermal power plant.

"The unit of the turbine house was damaged, causing a power blackout in the Bilovody, Kremensk, Novoaidar, Novopskov and Starobelsk districts, and partially in the towns of Rubizhne and Severodonetsk," Moskal said on Thursday.

Power had been restored by 3:00 a.m., he said.

"It was not the first emergency blackout on Ukraine-controlled territory of the Luhansk region as a result of shelling of the town of Schastia. The terrorists have deliberately targeted thermal power plants in order to disrupt electricity supplies to civilians living near the front line," he said.
