Poroshenko thanks U.S. for $2 bln loan guarantee

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has spoken with U.S. Vice-President Joseph Biden on the phone, the presidential press service said.

"The interlocutors conferred on the Donbas situation and ways to achieve its peaceful resolution. The U.S. Vice-President expressed his firm support to the efforts of the Ukrainian President and declared a possibility of further expansion of sanctions against Russia in the case tensions continued to escalate," the report said.

Poroshenko and Biden discussed Ukraine-U.S. cooperation in the political, financial and defense fields. "The Ukrainian President thanked the United States for its decision to grant a $2 billion loan guarantee and said he was confident that the macro-economic aid would promote macro-economic stabilization of Ukraine and mitigate financial market shocks," the presidential press service reported.

The possibility of further U.S. technical aid to Ukraine was pondered too.

Poroshenko and Biden agreed to have a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference due on February 6-8 and discussed related preparations.
